Jones Walker residents waiting for cleanup, renovations — Fox 4

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Several residents living at Jones Walker Palm Gardens Apartments are still waiting to get their apartments repairs nearly a year after the building failed a HUD inspection , requiring the owners Tree Top Development to renovate apartments.

Monique Thompson said she thinks her 11 and 12-year-old daughters got sick because of mold that’s taking over her bathroom window.

“Not even a month ago, they had a little pneumonia in their lungs. And they had to take steroids and antibiotics.,” said Thompson.”

She said she just wants the housing complex to improve her home for her kids’ health.

“I just want them to do better on my maintenance and the mold and everything for the safety of my girls with their asthma,” she said.

Thompson said her shower has been leaking for years, and instead of replacing the shower, she said maintenance workers painted over it.

She said there’s only three maintenance workers for 80 units at Jones Walker,and only one of them handles repairs. She showed Fox 4 the damage left behind by the mold and leaky pipes. She said it’s been like that since she moved in three years ago.

Slabs of wood are falling off of her front door. She said instead of replacing the door, they added a screw to the lock. She said maintenance workers told her not to slam it when she closes it, so she doesn’t damage the door even further.

“If they can do better than what they’re doing, and make our place a nice place than what it is, then I’ll be more happy,” said Thompson.

So, she and her neighbors walked across the street to St. Philip CME church to tell Councilmember Johnny Streets about their living conditions.

Streets listened to their concerns and said he’s here to help.

“My main purpose here is to make sure that your living conditions have improved, your quality of life is improving,” said Streets.

He added it’ll take efforts from the people living at Jones Walker, the building management Tree Top Development and city leaders to make it a decent place to live.

“We all have to be in this together, because we all have to rely on each other,” said Streets.

Neighbors said they don’t want to attack management, but more maintenance workers could help with the repairs. Tree Top and Jones Walker maintenance workers did not answer calls from Fox 4 Monday afternoon.

Sheepshead Bay homeowners claim their block is plagued by three so-called “zombie houses,” derelict homes left vacant since Hurricane Sandy, which have become mold-infested blights occupied by drug addicts and packs of feral cats.

“I have noticed needles in the yard and in the houses along with make shift beds,” said Missy Haggerty, a third-generation Lake Avenue resident.

The properties located at 4, 5, and 14a Lake Ave. — part of the “courts” area of low-lying side streets between Shore Parkway and Emmons Avenue — were abandoned by one Zalman Weber after suffering sever flood damage during the 2012 super storm, and city officials have sought for years to contact him in an effort to either remediate, or demolish the dilapidated homes, according to Sheepshead Bay Councilman Chaim Deutsch.

In the meantime, his properties remain in a state of ruin. Throughout the wreckage of 5 Lake Ave., family pictures, baby’s clothes, and moldy stuffed animals remain abandoned by Weber’s former tenants, who fled from Sandy’s 90 miles-per-hour wind gusts and 14-foot storm surges nearly eight years ago, according to Haggerty.

“This is somebody’s belongings from Sandy, they up and left it. They were the renters,” Haggerty said.

And mixed in with the haunting collection of deserted household items are scores of used hypodermic needles, which squatters have discarded seemingly at random. During an Aug. 8 visit, this reporter found syringes littering the front yards, entrance ways, and floors of the abandoned homes, and piled on make-shift couches and atop soiled mattresses there.

And while locals aren’t thrilled by the prospect of heroin addicts shooting up down the block, the toxic black mold that infects the air around the forsaken zombie homes is far worse, according to Haggerty, who lives one door down from 14a Lake Ave., which is so mold infested, she avoids opening her windows.

“Let’s say I want to open my windows while I clean my house, the mold spores are airborne and will get back into my home,” said Haggerty.

Deutsch now says he’s given up trying to contact Weber, and is working with the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development to seal the homes at some point this month.

Officials at the city housing agency decided to seal the home at 6 Lake Ave., which is not owned by Weber, following an Aug. 8 inspection, according to a spokeswoman for the department.

The Department of Buildings will additionally deploy inspectors to conduct structural stability inspections of all four buildings to determine if they pose a hazard neighboring properties, the spokeswoman said.

Tyrrell Library repairs near completion — Beaumont Enterprise

Almost two years after Tropical Storm Harvey caused mold and mildew growth in the roof of the Tyrrell Historical Library, the historic building is nearing the final stage of repairs.

Workers are completing termite work on the building and then will have to lay new carpet before library staff comes in to make final preparations to allow residents back in.

“I think we’ll be finished sometime in September barring any other problems,” Beaumont Director of Facilities Keith Folsom said. “The public opening date is still up in the air with library personnel though. That’s up to them.”

A prolonged period without air conditioning and humidity controls because of Tropical Storm Harvey caused the mold and mildew growth in the ceiling area of the building. To remedy that, crews cleaned the mold off and neutralized it, cleaned the building’s duct work and then repainted the ceiling a lighter blue than previously.

Library administrator Paul Eddy noted the actual materials in the library, that was once the Old First Baptist Church, did not sustain any physical damage from the storm.

After that, workers repairing the plaster where water had previously gotten into the building and instances of termite damage. These fixes weren’t for Harvey-related planning but would also have required the library to be closed.

“We already were planning to do wood and plaster repair. That project was already in the works,” Folsom said. “Then Harvey hit and we had to do work in the ceiling and replace the flooring. So the preplanned work lined up with needing to do these Harvey repairs.”

The actual work, which initially was expected to close the library for only two or three months, began in January and is expected to be complete by the end of September.

Eddy said a lack of qualified companies that bid on projects, funding from the city and FEMA, and the continued expansion of the scope of work is what kept the work from starting until this year, despite being more than a year removed from Harvey’s torrential rains.

“Please know that the city and library staff are working hard to get the Tyrrell back open for the public,” he said.

Since the annex, which was built in 2009, was cleaned and sanitized and air quality tests came back negative, library staff have been hard at work on the library’s digital site.

They have added “tens of thousands” of images and descriptions to the catalog as well as taken in “important collections and other data” that will be put into the archives, Eddy said.

“Throughout the time we have been closed, we have continued to field questions and requests from the public about the library and its contents,” he said.

Eddy said library staff doesn’t yet have a clear idea for an opening date. Before it can open to the public, library staff will need to clean the library and store items that have been utilized for research purposes.

Once that work is complete, staff will plan a grand reopening of the building with the Tyrrell Historical Library Association.

Steven Lewis, president of the Tyrrell Historical Library Association, said he hopes to see more people use the library when it’s reopened.

As a part of that, his organization is looking to plan more events at the library in an effort to make more people aware of the resources available.

“History is one of those things that some people don’t care about,” he said. “But if you are a person, like me, who’s interested in a place, and you want to know the people or the buildings that are important, I wouldn’t know what to do if I didn’t have a place like the Tyrrell to go.”

‘Potential mold’ forces North DeKalb Mall post office to close temporarily — WSB Atlanta

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Water damage and the threat of mold has forced the post office at North DeKalb Mall to temporarily close, officials said.

There was «visual evidence of water damage to the ceiling and walls» at the post office, which is located on the southern side of the mammoth retail center, U.S. Postal Service spokesman Rick Badie told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday.

Crews are testing for «potential mold,» he said.

Customers continued to attempt to enter the post office Thursday.

«I’m really upset and disappointed,» said customer Manan Sisodiya.

Those who live close by are forced to use another branch about 2 miles away while anyone with a post office box now has to pick up their mail in downtown Decatur. However, they can’t go after hours, and many business owners and customers said they got no notice or warning.

«I just came and it’s closed … Some trouble to go to some different location. I don’t know what to do,» he told us.
