Chapter closes as First Baptist Church in Branford demolished — Suwannee Democrat

BRANFORD — Demolition on First Baptist Church in Branford started early last week, making plans for a new church building a possibility for the future of the First Baptist Church congregation.

The site where the former First Baptist Church building sat is now being cleared of the rubble of its remains. Once the debris is cleared, the church can come to a conclusion on what the plans for the future will be.

“I know it’s sad for those in the community to see a building that has been here for so long be demolished, and I know some are upset, and rightly so,” Pastor Wade Howell said. “The saying where one chapter closes, a new one opens still holds true, and we hope moving forward that the congregation will grow and the community will be pleased with the new building that is to come.”

The old church building had not been used for roughly two years. There were leaks in the roof that warranted a new roof being put on to replace the old roof, which caused water damage structurally as well as mildew and possibly mold, which appear with any extensive water damage that may be present.

The church has been holding services in its Christian Life Center during that time.

Along with the water damage and leaking roof, the old building was also built in sections, which meant that many entries and exits were viewed as security risks.

“Too many exits makes it hard to keep up with ensuring that the building is safe and secure for our congregation and their families,” Howell added.

Howell has been in the ministry for 20 years, he is a graduate of The New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he also taught for two years. He began at First Baptist Church of Branford in September 2018 as the interim Pastor, to which the church then asked him to step up as lead Pastor in January.

The plan for the future in moving forward is to build a new structure for the worship services so that they are separated from the Christian Life Center.

The purpose of the Life Center is meant to be an asset to the community, for several community services, one of the services that Pastor Howell wants to implement is a Senior’s Day, with the idea of having a once a month time to where senior citizens of the community can come to the Christian Life Center for a few hours of recreational activities and games they might enjoy, along with a complimentary meal.

“We want the Christian Life Center to be an asset to the community, that’s what it was intended for, so we certainly hope we can rebuild, and have a vision set forth in time, to get this building back to the use it was intended for,” he said.

County looking into repairing leaky roof, removing mold from courthouse annex — The Messenger

When it rains it pours, as they say. Or, in the case of the Hopkins County Courthouse Annex on East Center Street in Madisonville — when it rains, it molds.

An ongoing issue of a leaky roof at the annex that houses both the county attorney’s offices as well as the county’s property valuation administrator’s offices, is finally to the point that something has to be done.

Though no official action was taken in Tuesday’s Hopkins County Fiscal Court meeting, the body that oversees the buildings and grounds for the county addressed the situation earlier in the morning in a committee meeting.

In that meeting it was determined the county would begin the process of advertising for bids to have the roof repaired and any mold from the property removed.

For PVA Pam Love Barber, the court’s decision is good news as she says she has concerns regarding the safety and health of her employees who have been exposed to visible mold for far too long.

«I can deal with the water, but with the water comes the mold, and that causes concern,» she said. «It seems like we have all been sick since the spring, and I have to think the mold isn’t helping.»

The building is split between the PVA and County Attorney Byron Hobgood’s offices. Hobgood expressed similar concerns at the committee meeting on the matter.

Visible water damage can be found throughout the building as can mold around vents and ceiling tiles, according to Barber, who is in her second term in office.

Mike Duncan, who serves as the county’s community development director and who often oversees maintenance projects for the county, said the problems can be traced to the flat roof that sits atop the wood structure.

«I know there have been some attempts to do some patch work, but nothing that would fix the issues long-term,» Duncan said. «A lot of the stuff that was stored in the attic has been removed, and I think that has helped, but it’s going to take more than just patching a leak to address the problem.»

Duncan said he has asked the county’s maintenance crew to compile a report to present to the county that will detail the issues and concerns with the property prior to the next court meeting set for Tuesday, August 6.

In other news, the fiscal court:

• entered into a memorandum of agreement with the city of Dawson Springs and the Dawson Springs Independent School District regarding funding for a school resource officer. The agreement mirrors the same arrangement between the entities for the previous school year. As part of the financial agreement, the county will pay $20,000 over nine monthly installments toward the salary of the officer, with the school system paying an additional $20,000. The money would go to the city of Dawson, who in turn will provide the school district with one certified police officer as the SRO.

Tips for cleaning up the mess after the storm

It’s best to start cleaning up after storms right away. But you need to be patient, stay safe and make sure the work is done right.

If you’re left with damage after the storm, you’re going to want to start cleaning up right away. But you need to be patient, stay safe and make sure the work is done right.

Here are some tips from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Be careful near damaged buildings

  • Keep in mind that typhoons can damage buildings and make them unsafe. If your home or another building has been damaged, make sure it’s safe before going inside.
  • Leave your home or another building right away if you hear shifting or unusual noises. Strange noises could mean it’s about to fall.

Prevent mold growth

  • Clean up and dry your home quickly after the storm ends- within 24 to 48 hours if possible.
  • Air out your house by opening doors and windows. Use fans to dry wet areas. Position fans to blow air out of doors or windows.
  • Throw away anything that you can’t clean or dry quickly (such as mattresses, carpeting, carpet padding, rugs, upholstered furniture, cosmetics, stuffed animals, baby toys, pillows, foam-rubber items, books, wall coverings, and paper products).
  • Remove and discard drywall and insulation that has been contaminated with sewage or flood waters.
  • Thoroughly clean all wet items and surfaces with hot water and laundry or dish detergent. For example, you’ll want to clean any flooring, concrete, molding, wood and metal furniture, countertops, appliances, sinks, and other plumbing fixtures.
  • Fix any leaks in roofs, walls, or plumbing as soon as you can.

Cleaning up mold with bleach and water

  • Never use bleach in a closed space. Open windows and doors first.
  • Put on personal protective equipment to protect your eyes, nose, mouth, and skin. Wear goggles, an N-95 respirator, and protective gloves.
  • To make your cleaner, mix 1 cup of household bleach with 1 gallon of water.
  • Clean everything with mold on it.

Disinfect toys

Remember that anything that’s had contact with floodwater could carry germs. To keep your kids safe, make sure their toys are clean:

  • Make a cleaning fluid by mixing 1 cup of bleach in 5 gallons of water.
  • Wash off toys carefully with your cleaner.
  • Let the toys air dry.
  • You may not be able to kill germs on some toys — like stuffed animals and baby toys. Throw out toys you can’t clean.

Wash up with soap and water

Wash up with soap and water once you’re done cleaning.

If there is a boil-water advisory in effect:

  • Use water that has been boiled for 1 minute (allow the water to cool before washing); or
  • Use water that’s been disinfected for personal hygiene:
  • When using 5-6% unscented liquid household chlorine bleach – add a little less than 1/8 teaspoon (8 drops or about 0.5 milliliters) per 1 gallon of clear water. Stir well, and let it stand for 30 minutes before using. If the water is cloudy, add a little less than ¼ teaspoon (16 drops or about 1 milliliter) per 1 gallon of water.
  • When using 8.25% unscented liquid household chlorine bleach – add a little less than 1/8 teaspoon (6 drops or about 0.5 milliliters) per 1 gallon of clear water. Stir well, and let it stand for 30 minutes before using. If the water is cloudy, add 12 drops (or about 1 milliliter) per 1 gallon of water.
  • If you have any open cuts or sores that were exposed to floodwater, wash them with soap and water and apply an antibiotic ointment to prevent an infection.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you become injured or sick.
  • Wash all clothes worn during the cleanup in hot water and detergent. These clothes should be washed separately from uncontaminated clothes and linens.

11 questions you should ask the owners of the home you’re buying while you have the chance — Danbury News Times

Published

  • Buying a home is an extremely important decision, and there are many questions a prospective home buyer should have for the homeowners.
  • We asked real estate agents to list the most pressing questions you should ask the owners of the home you’re buying while you have the chance.
  • They recommend asking about neighborhood noise levels, the house’s maintenance and repair history, and other topics.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Buying a home is one of the biggest and most important purchasing decisions a person will ever make.

With the median home listing price in the US at nearly $230,000, it is no wonder the process can be stressful. It requires a long and sometimes tedious process of market research, saving, negotiating with homeowners, and doing your due diligence to know the current real estate market like the back of your hand.

There are important questions to ask a homeowner before signing on the dotted line and purchasing a home. You’ll want to know about repairs that have been done on the home or those crazy neighbors who wake them up in the middle of the night. Remember — this is your future home, so you shouldn’t be afraid to pry a little.

We asked real estate agents to list the most burning questions you should ask the owners of the home you’re buying, if you get the chance.

Here are the most pressing questions.

Why are you selling the home?

AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall

Yes, it’s OK to ask. It’s actually necessary for you to decipher if there are any red flags before you make a down payment on a home.

It’s one thing to relocate for the purpose of a new job or growing family. However, if there are other (more hidden) reasons like maintenance concerns or negative occurrences that have happened in the home, it’s good to know before signing on the dotted line.

If you don’t get a direct answer, then don’t be afraid to ask more than once.

How long have you lived in the home?

10’000 Hours/Getty Images

This question can be a good indicator of how much they enjoy living in the home.

Have they only lived there for a few months or is this a house they have made their home and built a life in? Allow the homeowners to tell their story and paint a picture. Let them really sell it to you. Listen closely for red flags or reasons why the home may not be a good fit.

Has there ever been water damage?

Education Images/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

This question is an important one, as water damage is one of the biggest threats to homeowners.

Water damage can flow throughout a home causing multiple areas of damage. It can lead to mold in hidden places. Ask about any leaking issues in their washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator, or other appliances.

«Knowing if (a home) has had previous water issues will help you determine if you’re buying a gem or a lemon,» Andrew Helling, real estate agent and owner of REthority.com, told Business Insider.

Doors open on new weight room at West — Carolinacoastonline

MOREHEAD CITY — West Carteret debuted its new weight room last week, getting a substantial upgrade from the old facility damaged during Hurricane Florence.

With the old facility flooded and falling apart at the seams, the school sprang for a new space in an exterior brick-and-mortar hallway. The doors opened to student-athletes for the first time July 8.

“The players couldn’t believe it,” West football coach Daniel Barrow said. “Going from what we had to what we have now, it’s amazing. It’s a bigger incentive for them to get out of bed this summer and go hit the weights.”

The new weight room is expansive, taking up the space of three classrooms with the interior walls removed. Rows of multi-purpose racks and lines of dumbbells adorn the rim of the room, with fresh paint and towering mirrors situated on the walls behind them.

“I’ve been in a few high school weight rooms,” Barrow said. “I know I’ve seen pictures of grander ones, but I’ve never personally been in a better weight room.”

The fifth-year head football coach emphasized the advantage the sweeping facility offers the 3A program.

“We’ve been averaging in the 50s for our summer workouts,” he said. “In the past, we’ve had to divide the kids into groups, with one inside the weight room and another outside. There just wasn’t enough room for everyone. That first Monday, we had 62 at the workouts, and we were able to fit everyone in there comfortably.”

The multi-use rubber flooring also provides a sanitary upgrade from the rundown carpet that used to floor the facility.

“It’s going to be an easy-to-clean area,” Barrow said. “Our old weight room had carpet floors, and the walls were starting to fall apart. There were sections where you could actually see outside through the wall. It was hard to maintain it. This will be much more sanitary and easier to clean.”

Making the old facility sanitary would have been a unique challenge considering the water and mold damage sustained from the Category I hurricane that inundated the county with rain last September. Barrow remembers his first evaluation of the building after the storm had passed.

“It was pretty bad off after the hurricane,” he said. “There was water standing everywhere inside the weight room, and the ceiling was dripping down. It already wasn’t great in there before, and the storm pretty much did it in.”

Like many businesses and homes in the county, public schools were all assessed for mold and mildew in the wake of the water-logging. Measurements taken in the weight room were enough to warrant a drastic change in venue.

“We were here for our first post-storm practice when the mold guys came to measure the moisture in the weight room,” Barrow said. “We were in the locker room waiting for everyone to get there when the mold guys gave us the OK for the locker room and moved on to the weight room. About 30 minutes later, I saw them come out shaking their head. They knew it was bad off in there. It was off the charts in terms of the mold.”

West Principal Joe Poletti ultimately made the decision to scrap the old building and create space for a new weight room.

“There was some discussion of trying to save it, but with all the repairs and the cleaning, they ultimately decided to knock it down,” Barrow noted.

In the meantime, the weight room needed a temporary location, and it found one in a vacated auto shop classroom. There was no air conditioning in the building, but the student-athletes made do.

“That’s where we had weight training for the rest of the year and up until a few weeks ago,” Barrow said. “It was a good temporary space, but it’s not climate controlled so as it got hotter, it got a lot steamier in there. There was something organic about being in the shops and lifting weights, though. You’re doing a power clean (lift) right next to a car lift. It was kind of cool.”

The football team utilized one of its summer workouts to move all of the weight bars and plates into the new facility. Later, Barrow, former West football coach John Lancaster and receivers coach Sammy Teague moved the racks in and set them up in their permanent spots.

The new facility is a point of pride for all of West’s teams and student-athletes, but there’s an added bonus to football players. With a view of the stadium right outside the windows, players will get a little extra motivation as the gridiron season nears.

“Pride goes a long way,” Barrow said. “This facility will give them that and they will take pride in keeping it nice and maintained. It’s a lot like our locker room. That was a big goal of mine when I took over. I wanted a space where the kids could be proud and take ownership of it. We’ve accomplished that in both places now. We couldn’t be more excited about what’s to come.”

The West football team finished last season 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the 3A Coastal Conference. It returns to the gridiron this fall with a revamped roster after last year’s team graduated 17 seniors.

OIG finds potentially ‘significant’ health and safety issues at HCBS sites — News — McKnight’s Senior Living

Images contained in the HHS OIG report show noncompliance issues in Kentucky
adult day healthcare facilities.

Kentucky put at risk the health and safety of some older and disabled adults receiving home- and community-based services through section 1915(c) Medicaid waivers because its annual inspections were “insufficient,” according to a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Human and Human Services Office of Inspector General.

The state did not fully comply with federal and state requirements, the OIG said.

The office conducted unannounced visits at 20 adult day healthcare facilities in July and August 2018. Twelve of the 20 providers, according to the report, did not comply with one or more health and safety requirements, and 10 did not comply with one or more administrative requirements.

Overall, inspectors said they found 63 instances of provider noncompliance, including 26 instances of noncompliance with health and safety requirements. The other 37 instances were related to administrative requirements, some of which could “significantly” affect health and safety, the OIG said.

Issues of noncompliance included the presence of unsecured cleaning supplies, dirty restrooms, water damage and mold, and understaffing as well as failure to complete required criminal background checks or drug tests for staff members, lack of license documentation for social workers, and lack of documentation for dates and duration of service, services delivered, arrival and departure times, or monthly progress notes. Some providers did not perform or document required training or new employee orientation, and one provider had a policy allowing for physical restraint of program participants, which is not permitted.

As part of modifications to its provider recertification process in April 2018, the state now  annually reviews all providers and uses a certification tool during an announced site visit to each provider, the report noted. Still, the OIG recommended that the state ensure that providers correct the 63 instances of noncompliance identified in the report, consider unannounced site visits as a way to improve its oversight and monitoring of providers, improve its certification tool and work with providers to improve facilities, staffing and training.

State officials said they are revising regulations and supplementing policy manuals to clearly define facilities, staffing and training requirements.

Emergency services were called to the Bryn Coch Lane area of the town at around 6pm on Tuesday after the van caught fire on the road.

Paramedics attended the nearby Ffordd Dol Goed to treat the man before he was flown to Whiston Hospital in Liverpool — a specialist burns centre.

It is understood that the man was able to free himself from the van before seeking help from the emergency services while on Ffordd Dol Goed.

No further details were available on the man’s condition.

The fire service confirmed that one crew from Ruthin attended the blaze at around 6pm, and used breathing apparatus and hose reels to put the fire out.

They did not have any further details on the damage caused to the van, or the cause of the blaze.

Officers from North Wales Police closed the junction at Ruthin Road while emergency services worked at the scene.

On Twitter, the force said: «Road closed A5119 Ruthin Road, Mold near to junction with Bryn Coch Lane due to vehicle fire.

«Road is expected to be closed for an extended period.

«Please avoid the area.

«Highways Agency will be placing diversions.»

The road remained closed at 10pm on Tuesday evening.
