Health officials canceled elective surgeries at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center after mold was found in a room used to sterilize surgical equipment, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Boyle Heights hospital will be unable to perform surgery and many other medical procedures for an estimated two weeks, according to an internal hospital email sent on Sept. 25.

The Central Sterile processing room, which disinfects all [operating room] and procedural supplies for clinical areas, is suffering from severe water damage and mold contamination and must be closed immediately,” according to the email.

The 600-bed facility, one of the largest public hospitals in the country, can still disinfect a small amount of surgical equipment, that will be used for trauma cases. All other procedures, except dentistry, which sterilizes its equipment at an alternative location, would be canceled.

Worrying New Mould Found In Discovery Garden Plants — 10 daily

Woolworths Discovery Garden fans were shocked a few weeks ago when mould was found growing on the outside of some of the free plants.

Now, some shoppers claim a new, different kind of mould is starting to appear on the pots.

Discovery Garden is Woolworth’s latest giveaway promotion, where shoppers receieve mini plants after purchasing supermarket items to a certain value.

One gardener posted two photos of her Bok Choi plant to the Woolworths Little Garden/Discovery Garden group on Facebook. The pots appeared to have a Slime Mould — or something similar — covering the outside.

Slime Mould is known more commonly as ‘dog vomit mould’ because it appears to resemble dog’s vomit with its lumpy consistency.

The good news is, the Slime Mould is harmless to plants, pets and humans. The dusty pores of the mould can affect people who have allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions, but usually, it clears itself within a few days.

Website the Master Gardener says, «Slime molds are most often found in moist, shady areas with abundant organic matter,» which could explain why some gardeners have been finding it on their mini herbs.

If Discovery Garden fans find this kind of mould on their plants and want to remove it, it’s as simple as scraping it off. Once the mould dries out it will disappear and the herbs and veggies grown will be safe to eat.

«It’s pretty normal, just wipe it off and put the pot in the sun if you’re not ready to repot yet,» one person commented regarding the mould.

«It’s a harmless mold. Usually happens when they stay too wet/not enough light & air. Just wipe off what you can but either way it won’t hurt them & isn’t dangerous,» another said.

In a statement obtained by 10 daily, Woolworths said it wanted to reassure growers that mould can be part of the natural plant growing process.

«Mould is found everywhere and in this case is caused by local growing conditions such as moisture and airflow,» a Woolworths spokesperson told 10 daily.

«If you see mould appearing, we suggest gently wiping it off with a tissue or cloth. If in doubt, you may wish to dispose of the plant as a precaution.»

The spokesperson also said the mould won’t damage the plant but usually indicates that the pots are being overwatered and have poor drainage or circulation.

To control mould growth Woolworths recommends ensuring the seedlings are getting plenty of air and sun.

«Maintain proper ventilation by leaving your seedling kits near an open window or outside when weather permits … control the amount of moisture you’re giving your seedling pot, soil should be moist but not too wet,» the spokesperson recommended.

But this isn’t the first time mould has been found in the Discovery Garden pots.

Woolies shoppers discovered a white spotty mould growing on the outside of the herb pots in the middle of September. Some shoppers reported noticing the white growth just days after planting their seedlings.

The people who posted images on social media claimed they had followed all the instructions strictly and were concerned their children would come into contact with mould.

Some gardeners claimed removing the mould was as easy as wiping it off every few days, while others said they couldn’t clean it off at all.

Others suggested that keeping the pots in the grower tray restricted airflow, which could cause mould to grow.

«Yes the airflow in the design is poor. Just let them sit out and get some natural light to turn it back,» a Discovery Gardner said on social media.

«I think the problem is the tray you have them in. No airflow. I have mine on an open dish,» another person commented.

Amazing mold pigs trapped in 30-million-year-old amber — ZME Science

Amber is nature’s time capsule. Sometimes, tiny creatures and plants get trapped in a tree’s resin and, under the right condition, become preserved in minute details for millions of years. The picture below, for instance, shows a 30-million-year-old piece of amber containing microinvertebrates known as “mold pigs.”

A mold pig trapped in fossilized amber. Credit: Oregon State University.

You’ve likely heard about water bears, or tardigrades, before. These adorable-looking microscopic creatures are extremophiles that are able to withstand intense heat, cold, pressure, radiation, even the vacuum of space.

We don’t know if mold pigs were as resilient as water bears, but they sure look very similar. Technically, the species is called “Sialomorpha dominicana,” where “sialomorpha” is derived from the Greek words for “fat hog” and “shape.” Dominicana comes the Dominican Republic, where the amber was discovered not too long ago.

When a tree suffers a wound (like a broken branch) or if it is attacked by insects or fungi, it exudes thick resin that plugs up the injury and prevents further damage. It seals and sterilizes the injury.

When resin is secreted, it’s not certain that it will turn into amber. More often than not, it gets weathered away. First of all, the resin needs to be chemically stable and not degrade over time. It has to be resistant to sun, rain, extreme temperatures, and microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. There are two types of resin produced by plants that can fossilize. Terpenoids are produced by gymnosperms (conifers) and angiosperms (flowering plants). They are composed of ring structures made from isoprene (C5H8) units. Phenolic resins are only produced by angiosperms. An extinct type of tree called medullosans produced another unique type of resin.

The mold pig

George Poinar Jr. from Oregon State University recently published a paper in which he and colleagues closely examined the amber and the microscopic hogs trapped inside it, along with their fungal food source and other animals that lived in their habitat.

“Every now and then we’ll find small, fragile, previously unknown fossil invertebrates in specialized habitats,” Poinar said. “And occasionally, as in the present case, a fragment of the original habitat from millions of years ago is preserved too. The mold pigs can’t be placed in any group of currently existing invertebrates – they share characteristics with both tardigrades, sometimes referred to as water bears or moss pigs, and mites but clearly belong to neither group.”

In total, the researchers have numbered several hundred individual fossils in the small piece of amber. Apart from mold pigs, the amber contains pseudoscorpions, nematodes, fungi, and protozoa.

Each mold pig is no longer than 100 micrometers and had flexible heads and four pairs of legs. The researchers assert that they must have grown by molting their exoskeleton and likely subsided on a diet of fungi and small invertebrates. Whereas mites and water bears have claws present at the end of their legs, mold pigs have none.

“The large number of fossils provided additional evidence of their biology, including reproductive behavior, developmental stages and food,” he said. “There is no extant group that these fossils fit into, and we have no knowledge of any of their descendants living today. This discovery shows that unique lineages were surviving in the mid-Tertiary.”

The researchers’ classification suggests that mold pigs represent a new phylum — a level of classification or taxonomic rank below kingdom and above class.

What researchers hope to answer in the future is when did this lineage originate and how long it lasted. Whether there are any living descendants to mold pigs is anyone’s guess at this moment.

Findings were published in the journal Invertebrate Biology.

Keep Pensacola Beautiful is abandoning plans to purchase the historic Hygeia Coca-Cola bottling plant after an architect’s report showed water damage and mold cleanup would be far too costly for the nonprofit.

Staff had started a campaign to raise money for a $300,000 down payment on the building on North Palafox Street by Oct. 1. While about $100,000 was raised by Keep Pensacola Beautiful, the facility assessment, received Sept. 30, showed the damage remediation would total about $8 million.

«It’s stuff that you can’t really see by just walking through the buildings,» said Sigrid Solgard, executive director of Keep Pensacola Beautiful. «We could see that there was damage but we didn’t know the extent and the price tag that would be associated with that.»

Original plans: Keep Pensacola Beautiful aims to restore old Coca-Cola building, add garden and event spaces

More historic buildings: 1925 Jay schoolhouse lands on ’11 to Save’ Florida historic preservation list

The nonprofit, which encourages beautification projects and environmental stewardship, has its current lease for another year, Solgard said. But staff will still be looking for a new building to purchase, particularly one that they can restore or otherwise improve to help with blight in the community.

Keep Pensacola Beautiful planned to invest $5 million over five years to renovate the 1936 Coca-Cola plant for its offices as well as install a learning garden, classrooms and event space, and develop a nonprofit incubator — a low-cost office space for other organizations. Staff also planned to submit an application for the building to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

«We did not come to this decision lightly. We explored every possible avenue to make this vision a reality. If there was a way, we would have done everything in our power to make it happen,» the organization published in a statement. «All we can do now is work with our community to help people become good stewards of historic property and our environment.»

While most of the plans were specific to the Coca-Cola plant, Solgard said she’d like to still see a learning garden as part of a new project.

As for the money raised for the project, Solgard said staff would be reaching out to those who had specifically donated to its building acquisition fund. She said leaving the money for the next building, putting it in an endowment or offering refunds are all options.

Melanie Nichols, president of the North Hill Preservation Association, said her organization was a big supporter of Keep Pensacola Beautiful’s effort to restore the Coca-Cola plant and even donated to the project.

«We’re incredibly disappointed,» Nichols said, adding that she hoped someone would still buy the building and put it back into use. «We’re very alarmed that we may lose this Pensacola historic building. It’s an icon in Pensacola.»

Members of the association and neighbors of the plant had previously stopped a bid by the Florida Department of Corrections to lease the space for a probation and parole facility in 2014, citing concerns on issues like safety. News Journal reports from the time said the office would have serviced 3,200 offenders each month and 212 of them would be violent or sex offenders.

9 Red Flags When Shopping for an Investment Property — Motley Fool

5. The seller asks you to waive your right to inspect

It’s fairly common for a seller to list an investment property as «as-is» or «will make no repairs,» especially if it’s an older property or a fixer-upper. However, it’s not common for sellers to ask buyers to waive their right to inspect and back out of the deal if they don’t like what they see.

The only reason I would ever waive my right to inspect is if I planned to renovate the property all the way down to the studs or tear it down. Even then, I still wouldn’t consider it unless I was getting a tremendous deal.

6. Evidence of structural issues

If a property has uneven floors or you see cracks on exterior walls, it could have structural or foundational problems. These can be very costly and time-consuming to fix. I typically won’t go near a property with structural problems unless I’m getting a phenomenal bargain.

7. Bad neighborhood or school district

This is perhaps my biggest red flag for a simple reason: You can change nearly everything about a property given enough time and money — except its location. If a property is located in an area with a high crime rate or an undesirable school district, the price needs to be really enticing to get me interested.

The same can be said if a property is in a flood zone or has other location-specific problems. Your real estate agent should be able to tell you where the higher-crime areas are in your target market as well as what schools parents want their kids to go to. Zillow also has some good information, particularly on school districts.

8. Sentimental sellers

In my experience, there’s little sense in negotiating with sellers who have an emotional attachment to a rental property. As an investor, it’s a simple matter of dollars and cents — if a property makes sense financially, you’ll buy it. If it doesn’t, you’ll move on.

For example, I was looking at a package of two duplexes that the seller inherited from her late father. It was listed for $350,000. After crunching the numbers, I determined that I could pay no more than $300,000 or else the investment would have negative cash flow. I offered $275,000 to start, and the seller countered with $349,500 (what a discount!). I upped my offer to $295,000, told them that it was final, and the seller didn’t budge. The listing agent informed us that the property had been on the market for six months because the seller «just knows it’s worth $350,000.»

This was nearly a year ago and this property is still on the market today.

These days, I try to get a feel for how attached a seller is to their property before I start the process. Usually, listing agents will tell you if there’s wiggle room in the price or not.

9. Bad floor plan

Some design issues can make it difficult to rent a property out. For example, if you have a three-bedroom house but one of the bedrooms is the size of a closet, it can be a major turnoff to potential tenants expecting three full-sized rooms. Tiny kitchens or closets can be another problem. Few closets in a home can drive potential renters away.

Another example I run into often because I invest primarily in older homes is a single bathroom for three or four bedrooms, especially if it’s not on the ground floor. If you’ve never lived in a two-story home built before the 1960s, you may not realize how common this is.

A bad floor plan isn’t necessarily terrible, but it’s important to realize that floor-plan issues can severely limit the property’s rental income potential.

Is a red flag a deal-breaker?

Aside from not being allowed to see the inside of a property before closing and sellers who won’t budge on unrealistic listing prices, none of these are automatic deal-breakers. However, you should take them into account when shopping for investment properties. Adjust your offer based on how they may affect your income.
